Joseph Angelakis

Joseph Angelakis is a theatre director, actor, screenwriter, and an English and Drama teacher. Joseph has been studying and performing in dramatic arts and film since his childhood. He has performed in over 100 productions as an actor and was twice nominated for The Kennedy Center’s prestigious Irene Ryan Award for college actors. He has been teaching English and Drama since 2008 in various schools all around Hong Kong including most recently writing and directing Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland at Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Wong Yee Jar Jat Memorial Primary School which has gone on to public performances in The Hong Kong Schools Drama Festival 2025.


Joseph was born in San Francisco, California. He spent 11 years of his life growing up developing a passion for the performing arts. In high school he was an active member of his school’s Drama society and sung at the highest level of Chamber Choir. He was also a well known actor in his local community theatre.
While studying acting under Susan Jackson and Gloria Weinstock at San Francisco City College in 2000, he was first nominated for the Irene Ryan for his role as “Bert” in Arthur Miller’s All My Sons. He then transferred to Yuba College to study under David Wheeler and was nominated for the Irene Ryan award for the second time for his role as the “Marquis of Posa” in Friedrich von Shiller’s Don Carlos. A gypsy at heart, Joseph continued to travel around California to learn new styles and techniques. In 2004 he found himself in Humboldt County studying under Kjeld Lythe at The College of the Redwoods where he played “Oscar Madison” in Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple. While studying under John Heckel at Humboldt State University, Joseph led the ensemble cast in the world premiere production of “Relative Captivity” by Margaret Thomas Kelso.
After many productive years in California, Joseph decided to move to Hong Kong in 2008 after completing his certification in TEFL. He started working as an English and Drama tutor while continuing to pursue his passion for the arts. In 2012, Joseph entered and won the International Academy of Film and Television’s “Next Big Filmmaker” contest, earning him a full scholarship for their certificate program in filmmaking. Joseph is a graduate of the International Academy of Film and Television and holds certificates in Filmmaking and producing. As for acting, most recently he could be seen on stage starring in Aurora Theatre's productions of, "Inherit the Wind" and "The Crucible" and on Hong Kong television via RTHK educational television and TVB as well as a supporting role in Academy Award winning director Mike Figgis’ film Mother Tongue.
Joseph takes pride in being a leading drama practitioner in Hong Kong. After many years in the industry, Joseph is extremely excited and proud to finally be able to bring his creativity and work ethic to schools directly and is ready to provide the best experience for the best value.
